Love The Band

Hi, my name is Damon Mosley and I am a writer and filmmaker in Columbus, Ohio raising money to buy new instruments for a local high school marching band. 

East High serves mostly underprivileged, lower income families, and the band has been a longtime source of community pride despite tough circumstances. 

For decades, the band marched through the neighborhood before every home football game, bringing residents from their homes to cheer or join in. Generations grew up with the tradition. 

However, last summer people new to the area complained about band practice, escalating to threats of calling the police. 

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time this has happened; similar complaints go back to the early 2000s. But thanks to these amazing kids, it might be the last.

Instead of giving up, the East High band invited
the new residents to join them in celebrating its rich history. And in a surprise ending worthy of Hollywood, the neighbors had a change of heart. 

Say it loud: Teenagers caught between two worlds inspired grownups to overcome cultural differences to improve our community forever. They represent the best of us, and deserve to be seen AND heard.

But the East High band isn’t just a feel-good story. It’s a do-good story, too. 

As a child, I would run to the corner to watch them play. Now I want to give back. Fundraising for new instruments is my way of saying, “You matter. You count.”

The best thing we can do is show up for these kids. Let’s support them now like never before!
